5 Social Media Video
Editing Tips
I Use Daily

Video content reigns supreme on social media, but with countless videos uploaded daily, standing out can be challenging. As content creators, it’s vital to share videos that are engaging and connect with the audiences we’re speaking to. Ask yourself, am I looking to increase brand awareness? Attract new followers? Garner excitement and conversations about an upcoming launch? When you’re able to clearly define the objective of your video, you’ll find more success in creating effective social media content.

Here are 5 quick video editing tips I implement in almost every client project.

Capture b-roll when filming.

When filming interviews or longer-form content, consider setting up an additional camera angle to mix up your shots and toggle between the two while editing. A great rule of thumb is cutting to your close-up shot when your subject mentions something fascinating. Take the time to study cuts used during documentaries or other long-form content to create a seamless story. Don’t forget to add authentic-looking stock or onsite b-roll to mix things up and make your video even more dynamic. It keeps things interesting for your viewers and gives you more footage to work with.

Transitions + sound effects: less is (typically) more.

Adding a cool sound effect or a fun transition can definitely level up your video, but it’s easy to go overboard. Remember, the focus should be on your content, not the bells and whistles. Find that sweet spot where you’re adding visual interest without distracting from your message. My favorite platform to find effects and other creative assets is Envato Elements.

Keep it short and sweet.

In today's fast-paced digital world, attention spans are shorter than ever. That's why I prioritize concise editing. By cutting to the next clip within 1.5 seconds, I maintain a high-energy pace that keeps viewers engaged. And always start with your most compelling footage to grab their attention from the get-go. Bonus: start strong with your best footage to hook viewers right away.

Explore editing tools.

While DaVinci Resolve is my go-to editing software for video projects, I'm always exploring new tools. Scrolling through CapCut and Instagram Reels offers creative inspiration and efficient editing options. Experiment with different platforms to discover the perfect fit for your content. Just remember to remove those pesky watermarks for a polished finish.

Lighting is everything.

Natural light is your friend. Take the time to set up your shot so it looks good. Trust me, the extra effort is worth it. Plus, the more you practice, the better you’ll get at finding the perfect angles and composition. And that's how you develop your own unique style!

Bonus: stay on top of trends! Platforms like Instagram are always testing new features. Use them! Whether it's subtitles, new effects, or different formats, jumping on trends can help your content reach more people.

There you have it! These are my go-to video editing tips. Remember, practice makes perfect. The more you edit, the better you’ll become. And if you need help creating amazing video content for your small business, don't hesitate to reach out!
